Office of the Chief Nursing Officer

Assistant in Nursing – acute care

Those working in this relatively new role provide support to the registered nurse (RN) or midwife (RM). The assistant in nursing (AIN) delivers a high standard of patient care whilst practising within their scope. The AIN always works under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife who guides, directs, coordinates and supports the AIN.

Training

The only AIN acute care training program currently available in Western Australia is through WA Health.

The program runs for 18 weeks full-time at Fremantle Hospital. The first 7 weeks of training is theory, where you will learn required skills. The following 11 weeks is spent applying these skills in a health service.

Practice on the wards consists of a rotating roster. You will need to be available for shift work including weekends, night duty and public holidays.

Please contact us if you have a genuine interest in this training and want further information about training dates.

Requirements and conditions

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and preferably have completed year 10 maths and English.

You will need to attend an information and assessment seminar as part of the selection process.

Trainees are paid a salary during the course. There is no form of leave available during the program.
