Shared Health Interactive Practice

Purpose

The purpose of the SHIP (Shared Health Interactive Practice) group is to support and promote the education of health professionals in Western Australia using a blended learning approach through simulation and shared learning.

The SHIP group is sponsored by the Department of Health for Western Australia and the Nurses Board of Western Australia.

Individuals are eligible for membership following the completion of the introductory learning object development workshop or equivalent and commitment to contributing to the development of one learning object per year. For the purpose of SHIP a learning object is defined as an interactive multimedia educational tool.

Background

The SHIP group was formed on July 24th 2006. Ms Anne Spencer (Dublin City University, University of Southampton, University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust) and Ms Pamela Henry (Dublin City University) facilitated a 4 week workshop on the development of new learning technologies to support nursing and midwifery education. This initiative was sponsored jointly by the Department of Health for Western Australia and the Nurses Board of Western Australia.

This invitation followed a keynote presentation at the Nursing Education Today Conference in Durham University (UK) in September 2005 attended by Professor Robin Watts. The presentation focussed on solutions to address current challenges in the area of nurse and midwifery education and training in both the UK and Ireland. It illustrated the Evolving Interactive Practiceã concept, which can be delivered both in conjunction with simulation training and as a stand alone resource. From this 4 week workshop the SHIP group was formed.

Management Committee

The Committee consists of 8 health care professionals drawn from both clinical settings and local universities. This Committee is responsible for overseeing all developments within the SHIP program, communicating those developments to health services and education institutions, and ensuring the program is administered effectively and efficiently. The group is accountable to the Chief Nursing Officer, WA Department of Health (DOH).
